An expansion joint is installed in piping systems for a couple of reasons. Not only can they be used to absorb vibrations and shock, they can also be used to relieve anchor stress, reduce noise, and compensate for misalignment. Certain expansion joints are also designed for thermal expansion in very hot applications.

Expansion joints allow pipes to move in three different ways:

Axial compression or extension

Lateral offset

Angular deflection

They typically come in three different materials to cover a variety of applications.

Metal - Metal expansion joints are mostly used in applications where thermal expansion is an issue. When the temperature of the pipe increases, the metal expansion joint compresses to compensate for the movement, taking stress off the anchors and the pipe. A metal expansion joint is a prime example of how to handle expanding hot pipes.

Rubber - Rubber can be used for thermal expansion, and it also absorbs vibration and shock waves extremely well. That's why this type of expansion joint is great for minimizing the transmission of noise, vibration from other equipment to protect equipment like pumps. They also work as shock absorbers to minimize trauma caused by water hammer, pressure surges, and seismic events (not that we get a lot of earthquakes in Wisconsin...).

Braided - Braided stainless hoses with flexible or metal liners aren't technically an expansion joint, more of a flexible connector. They work well in high pressure and temperature applications requiring vibration dampening or pipe misalignments.

These are often used on pumps and other equipment to help eliminate thrust load on the equipment nozzles due to thermal expansion. Eliminating that load is critical to pump performance.

Braids provide lateral an angular movement. They also absorb vibration rather well.

the Method of Valve Automation Keeps Water Flowing Without Electricity

A wire manufacturing facility needed a safety net for their custom water system. Their wire production process required special deionized water to flow through certain areas that need to be cooled. The deionized water is supplied from an in-house water pump skid that cannot run without electricity. If the facility were to lose power, the wire production system would overheat without a backup water source.

It was critical to find a solution that would automatically protect their system around the clock. The manufacturer's present solution was to always have someone on standby, in case the plant lost power. In that case, the operator would use a manual butterfly valve to divert flow and shut down the system. This solution was extremely inefficient, and potentially catastrophic for the wire production system, should the power go out.

When they decided it was time for a more reliable answer, they went to the valve group at Crane Engineering for some ideas.

Crane Engineering's valve engineers suggested a three-port "T" valve that would allow the wire product system to use city water if needed.

The valve package included a spring return fail safe. If the plant were to have a power outage, the actuator would automatically "fail" and the spring would mechanically operate the valve to switch from deionized water to city water. The deionized water pump skid would shut down during power loss so the valve must switch water sources to keep fluid flowing. Without this automatic spring-loaded fail safe, the valve wouldn't switch water sources and the pipeline would run dry, causing the production system to overheat.

The EastMachinery® electric actuator installed on the valve allows operator to easily and effortlessly change the water source. This is also useful for the manufacturer when switching jobs because deionized water is not required between wire production runs.

Tell you Why the Mixer Is Leaking Oil

When a machine leaks oil, you know it's bad news. It's no different when it comes to industrial mixers. Our Service Team says when mixers are sent to us because they're leaking oil, it's usually because the seal is worn.
What could possibly be causing the seal to wear?
Here's a quick list of things to check before you call in someone to service it.
1, Dirt or Grit in the Seal
Dirt is the enemy for seals. The seal may just need to be cleaned, or it may need complete replacement.
2, Overfilled Reducer
There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Too much lubrication leads to higher operating temperatures and seal failure. You can read more about it in this post: "The Truth Behind Lubrication and Over Greasing". Then, check the lubricant level and adjust it to the recommended level.
3, Clogged Autovent
The autovent, or breather plug, allows steam and hot air to escape from the gear case. When dirt or grit gets into the autovent, it gets clogged and doesn't allow the seal to function properly. The reducer then has potential to overheat. Clean or replace the seal, being sure to prevent any dirt from falling into the reducer.
4, Improper Mounting Position
Always make sure the mixer is mounted the way it was intended to be. Check the mounting position against the approval drawings.
Still leaking oil? It might be time for some more serious repairs. Ask your service technician to help get to the root of the problem. Once the oil leakage is prevented, you will continue to get top performance from your industrial mixer.
